FAQ ABOUT ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (GENERAL)
What are the steps we need to undertake in order to conduct a capacity assessment?
Your organization will have to make its way through the following path:
Step 1. Identify the purpose of Evaluation: Identify the purpose(s) particular to this assessment, ask the organization members to state WHY the assessment is carried out.
Step 2. Select Team Composition: Select an assessment team to include people who know the organization and who will be in a position to carry out some of the recommendations that result from the assessment. Adopt a participatory approach
Step 3. Identify Information Sources: Identify internal and external information sources and we recommend you get first hand information by scheduling individual interviews, group meetings and data collection sessions to gather information. Plan on meeting with small groups of constituents, members and staff representatives in focus groups (discussion groups), as they are very helpful in identifying valuable information for decision making
Step 4. Conduct Interviews: Conduct interviews, meetings and data collection sessions with your constituencies. It is important that this data collection process is part of a broader work plan, and that the schedule of meetings and consultations is submitted to respondents in advance.
Step 5. Developing Recommendations: The members of the assessment team should be prepared to develop recommendations and advice on how the organization can improve. Capacity assessment are not conducted to PROVE, but to IMPROVE. As mentioned above, the members of the team should be able to implement the recommendations.
Step 6. Transparency: Recommendations should be discussed with organization management and staff in general, board members, partners, and active members of the beneficiary poll.
Step 7. Repeat: capacity assessments should be conducted periodically, and collected data should be compared to baseline assessment / last assessment to determine progress.
